Abstract

Grazie al veloce sviluppo della tecnologia negli ultimi venti anni, sono nate nuove figure di investigatori, gli archeometristi. L’archeometria studia materiali, specialmente del passato, usando tecniche e procedure che sono tipiche di investigazioni scientifiche, quali quelle usate da fisici, chimici e biologi. I contatti culturali tra discipline umanistiche e scientifiche hanno reso possibile lo sviluppo di questa area di ricerca. La conoscenza sulla composizione chimica di oggetti o decorazioni, lo studio delle loro proprietà fisiche, insieme con l’osservazione del loro deterioramento aumentano il contenuto di informazione circa i loro percorsi commerciali o circa i livelli artistici e tecnologici della manifattura del passato (ad es. trattamenti di ossidazione di metalli per la passivazione o la colorazione, pre-trattamento di pigmenti per affreschi) o anche per stabilire l'originalità di manufatti artistici. E’ giusto sottolineare che l’archeometria è ancora giovane, pertanto le procedure investigative seguite da diversi laboratori sono spesso differenti, anche quando venga usata la stessa tecnica. La mancanza di protocolli riconosciuti porta purtroppo spesso a risultati non comparabili. Qui si intende fornire una visione complessiva dell’uso della spettroscopia Raman con particolare riferimento alle applicazioni archeometriche di pigmenti, stucchi, tele e materiale lapideo e alle banche dati di spettri Raman utili all’analisi. Alla fine verranno presentati due recenti esempi di analisi Raman di materiali di valore artistico.
