Abstract

Nel Santuario di Apollo, l’area sacra più importante di Hierapolis di Frigia, gli scavi della Missione Archeologica Italiana (MAIER) hanno portato alla luce oltre 60 frammenti di marmo bianco riferibili a una statua di Atena di dimensioni superiori al vero. Ricostruita grazie all’ausilio delle tecnologie digitali, la statua viene analizzata in questa sede sotto il profilo tipologico e iconografico, e confrontata con la colossale Atena Parthenos scoperta nel 1880 sull’acropoli di Pergamo. Nel contributo si sottolinea, inoltre, l’importante ruolo rivestito in età imperiale dalla statua di Atena nel Santuario di Apollo che, ricco di sculture e riproduzioni di capolavori dell’arte antica, doveva apparire simile a un museo all’aperto dove la maestosa statua della dea elmata - visibile da tutte le angolazioni - poteva essere ammirata come emblema della saggezza, come patrona delle arti e degli artigiani e come simbolo dei rapporti con la dinastia pergamena che segnano le origini della città.
