Lo Schopenhauer di Giorgio De Chirico

Abstract

ENG The essay provides an in-depth analysis of the intricate relationship between Giorgio De Chirico's artistic oeuvre and the philosophical thought of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, emphasising the influence of Schopenhauer's philosophy, often overlooked by critics. The author investigates how De Chirico absorbed Schopenhauer's philosophy through Nietzsche, thus formulating a peculiar synthesis of the perspectives of the two German philosophers, which emerges distinctly in his metaphysical art. Furthermore, the essay examines the concept of ‘metaphysics’ as interpreted by De Chirico, understood as a dimension beyond human logic, attainable through an artistic act of ‘clairvoyance’ based on Schopenhauer's doctrine of ideas (Ideenlehre). The analysis also reflects on the artist's extraordinary ability to grasp metaphysical elements within everyday reality, highlighting the link between genius and madness theorised by Schopenhauer. This interconnection between philosophy, metaphysics and art demonstrates how De Chirico found in painting an expressive medium for his original, innovative and profoundly philosophical vision.
