The aim of this article is to elucidate the relationship between Leonardo and (thecity and idea of) Rome from a biographical and intrepretive point of view, focusingon the fascination which the cradle of classical antiquity and Christendom held forthe great scientist/artist, from the time of his projected but never realised travels toRome as a young and famous painter up to his stay in the city in 1513-16.
