Abstract

Il ritrovamento di un monumentale Busto di Bacco in marmo (alto circa un metro) riferibile a Giovanni Bonazza, non solo consente di aggiungere un’opera molto significativa al già nutrito catalogo dello scultore ma induce altresì a riconsiderare la sua attività di scultore profano, mettendo a confronto questo nuovo busto con i rilievi per l’Abate Varese, gli Indios di Villa Breda fino ai Pagodi della Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova. Proprio l’insieme di queste opere mette assai bene in luce la potente originalità espressiva di uno scultore che, cresciuto nella Venezia di Le Court e dei suoi più diretti seguaci (come Michele Fabris), sviluppa un linguaggio profondamente anticlassico, del tutto remoto da quello del barocco romano e viceversa in anticipo su alcuni degli aspetti più espressivamente intensi della scultura settecentesca d’oltralpe
