Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse the main history textbooks in use in secondary schools in the metropolitan area of Bologna and to assess their didactic appropriateness. Through an interpretative research based on six aspects (purpose, motivation, correctness of information, activities and exercises, interdisciplinarity, methodology and use of sources), ambivalent results were identified. On the one hand, textbooks are considerably developed with regard to the didactic purposes, motivation and classroom activities; the textbooks stimulate the desire to learn, have attractive graphics and exercises that allow the didactic activity to be modulated according to the needs of the class. On the other hand, the historical narration of the events is often evenemmental and unrelated to relevant topics, both close to the students’ everyday life and to the most recent academic historiography; equally worthy of revision would be the aspects related to the links between different disciplines and the use of sources.
