В момент появления литературы факта на русско-советской литературной сцене ослепительный блеск авангарда уже начинал затухать. А еще через несколько лет в литературно-художественной панораме происходит резкий поворот, обусловленный началом соцреализма. Дискуссия вокруг фактографии начинается в 1927 году на страницах журнала "Новый ЛЕФ", выходящего под редакцией В. Маяковского, и заканчивается в 1929 году, когда материалы этой дискуссии (уже после закрытия журнала) были собраны Николаем Чужаком и опубликованы в книге "Литература факта" .
