Nei primi due decenni del Novecento si diffonde anche in Italia un o stile espressionista, in cui le icone sintetiche del Simbolismo sono sottoposte a un trattamento brutale che elimina richiami ultra-terreni a favore di visioni crude e d imminenti, caratterizzate da una ripresa sistematica del passato italiano.
