Abstract

Il saggio ricostruisce a partire da un progetto di libretto inviato da Gustavo Modena al musicista Tadolini la cultura operistica dell'attore e i suoi rapporti con il teatro musicale. Da un lato, Modena, come diversi altri esuli italiani, trova nell'opera la possibilità di conciliare applicazione intellettuale e guadagno, dall'altro, questa progettualità suscita in lui intenti riformistici di ampio respiro che coinvolgono le convenzioni operistiche, la riflessione mazziniana sul dramma per musica, la poetica di Hugo, i conflitti politici. Per queste ragioni, lo scenario abbozzato da Modena per Tadolini costituisce un documento particolarmente importante, grazie al quale è possibile connettere in un sistema culturale articolato e unitario gli sparsi accenni a un teatro musicale possibile e alla concreta realtà operistica che figurano nell'insieme delle scritti modeniani.
