Abstract

Bases on an essay by Bruno (2020), which proposes a socio-educational paradigm to foster genuine ecological thinking from early childhood through literary education, this study constructs a corpus of three recently published picture books (two works of fiction and one of non-fiction). In these books, the reading experience is combined with the evocative power of images, establishing an empathetic and poetic connection between the reader and the environment. Through the analysis of each selected proposal, the study will demonstrate how their verbal and visual metaphors manage to develop in the reader a mental, cognitive, and emotional process aimed at building an “ecological self”, aware of being an integral part of nature and capable of acting in its defense
