Abstract

Rileggere le vicende che hanno attraversato l’Arcipelago di La Maddalena, in Sardegna, sorprende. La Maddalena si comprende su un mappamondo, ogni volta che la storia sceglieva un parallelo o un meridiano per dividere le civiltà e le nazioni, l’isola stava lì al centro: tra Europa e Africa, tra Occidente ed Oriente. Prescindere da questa geografia non è possibile né ha senso. La Maddalena non è stata soltanto una piazzaforte, un porto, è stata molto di più: una corazzata ancorata al largo del Tirreno settentrionale a presidio di quelle rotte che già i fenici solcavano per collegare l’Oriente a Massalia. Posta a presidio di quel punto, le Bocche di Bonifacio, l’isola custodiva le Colonne d’Ercole dell’era moderna. Ogni cosa a La Maddalena allude a questo rapporto. Queste tracce, questi manufatti adesso inutili: i forti costieri deserti, le caserme vuote, le batterie abbandonate, le officine e i cantieri immobili, gli eremi degli eroi, le prigioni dei dittatori, sono lo specchio di un mondo molto più grande dell’arcipelago e molto più complesso e pericoloso di quello che chi visita quel paradiso per turismo vuole dimenticare per una settimana o due. Eppure questo straordinario sistema di paesaggio può trovare un senso e uno scopo nel mondo di oggi lontano dalle necessità belliche che lo hanno prodotto nei secoli.
