Abstract

Short overview of the multilingual reality of Sardinia in the first centuries after the Roman conquest. Some evidences concerning Palaeosardian and Phoenician-Punic and therefore the linguistic contacts with Libyan, Greek and Etruscan languages are reviewed. The hypotheses on the propagation and stratification of Latin in Sardinia are then proposed, highlighting that on the island there must have been people, who were not necessarily part of the elite, able to speak or at least understand other languages besides their own. Proof of this situation would be the bilingual and plurilingual inscriptions found in Sardinia.
