Abstract

Nell’epoca attuale le aree urbane, pur coprendo solo il 2% della superficie del pianeta, costituiscono l’habitat per il 55% della popolazione mondiale, di cui almeno il 25% - secondo le stime UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) – vive in insediamenti informali e precari (Rapporto Habitat III, 2015). Il testo inquadra la questione della periferia, guardando oltre alle "periferie" del mondo agli squilibri economico-sociali e ambientali creatisi nel mondo occidentale.
