Energy Storage System for Domestic Peak Shaving

Abstract

This paper shows the results obtained with the design and implementation of a multi-purpose electric and electronic architecture used to manage the energy absorption from discontinuous loads and increase distribution efficiency and grid stability. A typical application is the power supply stabilization in household appliances and in light industrial loads. System is composed by simple components like a control unit with a PIC MCU processor, a chemical storage system, a power DC/AC inverter, a current limited battery charger and a GPRS data logger/actuator. The proposed system, in UPS mode, allows to supply 5kW load for 20 min at least with no electric absorption from the grid. Our study is motivated by the development of new technologies using already know technologies, with the final goal to increase the efficiency in the energy management in Virtual Power Systems and Smart Grids.
