Abstract

Partendo dai risultati della mostra monografica su Antonio Balestra (1666-1740) tenuta nel 2016-2017 a Verona e curata dallo stesso autore, l'articolo porta nuovi contributi alla conoscenza del più importante pittore veronese della prima metà del secolo attraverso opere inedite e rileggendo dipinti già noti in un contesto più ampio, fatto di relazioni, influenze e di stimoli culturali diversi. Le nuove acquisizioni, infatti, consentono di mettere meglio a fuoco non solo gli scambi di Balestra con l'ambiente veneziano (Amigoni, Rosalba Carriera, Ricci), ma anche il recupero della tradizione pittorica emiliana (Correggio e Cignani). Lo sguardo si allarga poi ad abbracciare l'organizzazione del lavoro della bottega, in seno alla quale emerge la personalità di Pietro Antonio Rotari (1707-1762) - che sarà il più internazionale dei pittori veronesi - qui analizzata nei suoi rapporti con i maestri (lo stesso Balestra, ma anche il romano Maratti e il napoletano Solimena) e nell'ambito, per certi versi ancora da sondare compiutamente, della produzione grafica.
