Arabic language influence in Africa

Abstract

La diffusion de l'Islam en Afrique a fait que beaucoup de langues africaines ont été influencées par l'arabe. Cette influence se manifeste au niveau des emprunts qui dans certaines langues véhiculaires, telles par exemple le haoussa ou le swahili, atteignent plus du 30% du lexique. Les emprunts, surtout nominaux, ont été introduits directement ou plus souvent à travers d'autres langues de peuples islamisés, qui les ont à leur tour véhiculés. L'article donne des exemples d'emprunts communs à plusieurs langues africaines surtout de l'Afrique occidentale et centrale, la pénétration musulmane dans l'Afrique bantu étant assez limitée. Malgré cela on trouve quand même des emprunts dans certaines langues bantu, telles le zulu, l'isiXhosa, etc., ou dans d'autres langues, qui pour d'autres raisons n'ont pas été influencées par l'arabe, comme l'acooli, le sango ou le dogon.
