This article aims to analyze the problem of history starting from memory in the writings of the German-speaking Romanian author, Herta Müller. The author felt it is necessary to witness and to denounce the tyrannical regime in which she lived, endeavoring to tell about its nonsense, even at the expense of her own life; as well as the necessity to leave her homeland. The Communist Regime made her an exile who attempted to pay a large debt to survive, through her tireless work to make the silent resignation of the Romanian people speak before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her work, which told of these tyrannies, is aimed to contrast the possible re-emergence in contemporary society of totalitarian tendencies which, in the name of abstract and perverse ideologies, intend to reach the submission and control of individuals. Since no contemporary political regime is completely immune from this possible drift, Herta Müller’s literature, like that of many other writers who have lived in a tyrannical regime, can be a necessary “weapon” of democracy.
