La composizione delle Osservazioni sulla tortura di Pietro Verri è testimoniata da due manoscritti conservati presso l’Archivio Verri di Milano. Il primo è un manoscritto autografo (segnatura 395.2.1) che contiene al suo interno due redazioni ; il secondo è un manoscritto apografo (segnatura 395.2.2). Dopo aver scritto la prima redazione sul ms. autografo, Verri ha fatto vergare il ms. autografo, che si ferma, però, all’altezza del fascicolo 12 (c. 32) di 395.2.1, poiché l’autore interruppe l’operazione di copia per continuare a lavorare sul manoscritto autografo 2.1. Nella prospettiva di un’analisi delle varianti è importante l’apporto del manoscritto apografo, poiché questo fissa un momento preciso della composizione e aiuta nella datazione di alcune delle varianti. Il contributo si focalizza soprattutto, attraverso alcuni esempi chiarificatori, sulla maggiore o minore presenza degli interventi all’interno del testo e sui modi utilizzati dall’autore per enfatizzare o meno un argomento piuttosto che un altro.

The composition of Pietro Verri’s Osservazioni sulla tortura is testified by two manuscripts stored at the Archivio Verri in Milan. The first one is an autograph manuscript (shelf mark 395.2.1), wich includes two redactions of the text ; whilst the second one is an apograph manuscript (shelf mark 395.2.2). Verri wrote the first redaction on the autograph manuscript and then ordered the copy – namely the apograph manuscript – that stops after the halfway point of the autograph manuscript. Finally, Verri continued the writing on manuscript 395.2.1. In order to understand the chronological order of the variants, the apograph manuscript is fundamental, as it sets a date for the composition and it helps with the dating of the other variants. The essay focuses on the authorial interventions and on the ways emphasises the different aspects of his argument.
