Abstract

Ce manuel d'épigraphie latine offre toutes les connaissances nécessaires pour apprendre à lire à et comprendre les inscriptions latines de la République au Bas-Empire. Aucun domaine n'a été négligé, des documents qui concernent les hautes sphères de l'Etat empereurs, magistrats, fonctionnaires impériaux de tous rangs, militaires, jusqu'aux rouages et aux acteurs de la vie économique et aux individus les plus modestes, connus au travers des listes de corporations, et des inscriptions funéraires. Les auteurs ont eu aussi l'ambition de replacer les textes dans un contexte urbanistique, monumental, politique, économique et social ; ainsi, inscription et contexte s'illuminent réciproquement ; c'est pourquoi l'exceptionnel patrimoine épigraphique d'Ostie Antique qui leur a servi de base documentaire leur a paru le mieux adapté à la réalisation de leur dessein. Un étudiant, un chercheur, un amateur éclairé pourront, avec ce manuel, retrouver les protagonistes de la vie au quotidien dans ce site privilégié, à la fois projection de Rome, dont il était le port indispensable à sa survie, et municipe autonome, miroir pour les communautés de tout l'Empire.
