Scetticismo e criticismo nel Medioevo

Abstract

La speculazione filosofica medievale si muove quasi esclusivamente nell’orizzonte segnato dalla religione, nel mondo latino quella cristiana; in un orizzonte dunque caratterizzanto dal fondarsi sulla ‘certezza’ data dalle fede indiscussa in una ‘verità’ rivelata. Tuttavia anche nel medioevo la risposta scettica all’antico interrogarsi intorno alle possibilità e ai limiti della conoscenza trova alcuni, seppur limitati, spazi. In proposito bisogna distinguere tre problematiche: I Il medioevo conosce lo scetticismo antico? Sì ma lo conosce poco e attraverso varie mediazioni. II Ci sono casi di adesioni esplicite a tesi scettiche? Sì ma sono casi estremamente rari. Inoltre, i tratta piuttosto di inviti alla cautela e alla modestia intellettuale e non di posizioni radicali di sospensione del giudizio in ogni ambito della conoscenza. III Esistono nel pensiero del medioevo riflessioni simili a quelle scettiche anche se non esplicitamente in relazione con lo scetticismo antico? Sì esistono ma di rado costituiscono le linee portanti della costruzione filosofica di un autore o di una scuola. Nella prima parte di questo articolo (a cura di L. valente) si affrontano le prime due questioni, esaminando alcune reazioni allo scetticismo antico da Agostino al XIII secolo (in particolare Abelardo, Giovanni di salisbury, Enrico di Gand). Nella seconda parte (a cura di A. Maierù) si approfondisce il terzo quesito, esaminando alcuni temi di autori del basso medioevo (Ockham, Nicola d’Autrecourt, Bernardo d’Arezzo) che in passato hanno fatto parlare di ‘scetticismo medievale’ – categoria storiografica oggi considerata fuorviante.
