Napoleone III

Authors: DI RIENZO, Pio Eugenio;
Abstract

This volume represents the first Italian scholarly biography dedicated to a character who had a tremendous impact on our nation during its process of unification. A history of the “Risorgimento” would be inconceivable without taking into account the political biography of Napoleon III, who, from 1856 to 1870, promoted, conditioned and impeded its development. The volume analyses the foreign policy of Napoleon III from French, Russian, Austrian, Prussian, and Italian archives. Furthermore, the volume is also a history of the Second Empire, a reconstruction of the institutional, parliamentary, economic, financial, social and religious situation of France during the second half of the Nineteenth Century. Napoleon III was the creator of an original system of government that, far from the traditional authoritarian experiences, mixed in itself anti-parliamentarism, charismatic authoritarianism, plebiscitarianism, but also constitutionalism and a genuine desire for social modernization.
