Musica e Industria. Storia, processi, culture e scenari

Abstract

Through reference to a broad international and interdisciplinary literature – including cultural sociology, industrial economy, media studies and popular music studies – the book offers an analysis of the music industry as a system and network of cultural production, consisting of interconnected sub-fields (publishing, live, recording). The study considers its initial formation and the transformation occurred, often through intra- and inter-organizational conflicts between different agents in the institutional field. The overall aim is to provide theoretical and methodological instruments to understand the changes taking place grasping continuity and discontinuity with respect to long-term dynamics and to assess their influence on music production. The first chapter is devoted to an analysis of different definitions and representations of the music industry, in order to evidence their potential contribution – and cons - for the study of music production practices and cultures. The second chapter offers an history of the processes of management and economic exploitation of the various forms of musical creativity, related to constant change of the system due to its reactions to wider cultural, social and technological changes. The third chapter shows the articulation and functioning of the music industry at the dawn of the radical changes concerning new forms both of distribution and commercial exploitation of creative output and participation in production. Such changes, related to the dissemination and specific uses of new digital technologies, are considered in the fourth and last chapter.
