Abstract

Questo studio rappresenta un primo tentativo di mettere in evidenza la situazione dei monumenti più antichi dell’isola di Creta. Lo spunto della ricerca, deriva da un primo riordino del numeroso materiale grafico e fotografico, che Giuseppe Gerola raccolse durante la sua prima missione cretese (1900-1902). In particolare s’è potuto analizzare lo stato di conservazione di alcuni edifici allo scadere di quasi un centenario. L’analisi dello stato di conservazione ha messo in evidenza tre tipi di situazioni: la prima delle quali si riferisce ad alcuni edifici che, dal tempo della missione Gerola, non sono stati oggetto di interventi e si conservano in perfetto stato; la seconda situazione, mostra edifici che, in questi ultimi cento anni sono stati modificati o riadattati dai sacerdoti che li avevano in custodia ed, infine una terza categoria di edifici che sono stati curati dalle “Eforie”, in questi ultimi casi, i risultati appaiono decisamente più consoni alla realtà architettonica della tradizione veneto-cretese.
