Abstract

“Early in 1976, the Plan for the Appia Antica Park, prepared by the Rome Section of Italia Nostra, was presented during an exhibition and conference at Palazzo Braschi. It finally seemed as though a troubled thirty-year story was reaching a happy conclusion — at times the ‘Appia Antica question’ had seemed completely lost, at times re-emerging and almost safe from what Goethe, when speaking of places like the Appia Antica, called «the devastating madness to which everything must yield»”. Thus Vittoria Calzolari opened her retrospective on the events surrounding the Appia Antica Park in 1990 in a volume dedicated to the Via Appia edited by Stefania Quilici Gigli.
