Milano, Firenze e l’assassinio di Girolamo Riario (1488). Politica, diplomazia, spionaggio

Abstract

The article aims at framing the death of Girolamo Riario, lord of Imola and Forlì, nephew of Pope Sixtus IV and brother-in-law of the Duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Maria Sforza, within a broader political-diplomatic context, highlighting not only the official relations between Riario and the political actors in Milan and Florence, but also the circulation of news headed by the ducal and Medici information agents, with a focus on Benedetto Dei an his correspondence with Lorenzo the Magnificent. The reconstruction is conducted through sources from the State Archives of Florence and Milan, from the manuscript fonds preserved in Florence at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale and at the Biblioteca Moreniana and from local chronicles. The documentation, placed in reciprocal dialogue, makes it possible to offer a new point of view on facts and personalities that have been extensively investigated by scholars, while at the same time it shows how the collaboration between Lorenzo the Magnificent and Benedetto Dei played a leading role in the construction of the Florentine intelligence circuit and in the control to which Girolamo Riario was subjected during his last years of life and government.
