Oriente, Vicino Oriente e e orientalismi

Abstract

The ancient Near East is the area of investigation of Oriental studies, where the sun of antiquity rises, linking our West and the great civilizations that arose east of the Mediterranean Sea. This definition is a sign of a fluid relationship that brings us closer to the East, whose antiquity is commonly understood as pre-classical, that is, preceding that of Greek and Roman cultures. The proximity and precedence of the civilizations located where the sun rises (from the Latin verb oriri) to the classical world have been interpreted differently over the centuries and have formed those paradigms of political thought that interpret the relationship as diverse depending on historical circumstances, in some cases as integrated and complementary (East and West), more often as contrary and opposed (East vs. West), and recently as organic but ambiguous (East, West).
