Monete e mitrei a Ostia antica

Authors: Alessandro Melega;

Monete e mitrei a Ostia antica

Abstract

The ancient city of Ostia represents a fundamental testimony for the knowledge of the archaeological and socio-historical dynamics of Roman religions. The site has yielded the largest number of known mithraea in an urban context in the Roman world, to which was added in 2013 the discovery of the Mithraeum of Coloured Marbles by the Ostia Marina Project of the University of Bologna. Following the realisation of a doctoral research dedicated to this complex subject, updated with new and modern cognitive tools, the present contribution intends to focus on the monetary finds that occurred in the Ostiense mithraea, which, although sporadic, contribute to a more exact reconstruction of the life and abandonment phases of these particular places of worship.
