Rap è un termine della lingua inglese comparso all’inizio del 19° secolo con il significato di «conversazione» o «discussione informale». Dalla seconda metà degli anni Settanta fu utilizzato per definire un modo di fare musica, affermatosi presso le comunità afroamericane e ispanoamericane di numerose città statunitensi, caratterizzato da rime, discorsi ritmici e linguaggio di strada, cantati su beat o accompagnamenti musicali
