Francesco, i Minori e la Terrasanta

Abstract

Nella tarda estate del 1219, Francesco si trovava Damietta, al pari di migliaia di altri pellegrini e crociati decisi a riportare Gerusalemme in mani cristiane. In un momento imprecisato – collocabile, con una buona approssimazione, tra il 29 agosto, data d’un aspro scontro tra le parti, e il 5 novembre, quando la città cadde in mani latine –, entrò nel campo musulmano, accolto dal sultano al-Malik al-Kāmil nella tenda adibita alle pubbliche discussioni. L’aurea di mistero che avvolge quell’incontro è ancora oggi intatta. Desiderava, forse, porre termine al conflitto? Era sua intenzione convertire il sultano? Ricercava il martirio? Si può pensare che la sua presenza nel campo crociato fosse finalizzata a sostenere una Cristianità in armi o nel nostro è da leggere un rifiuto o – come è stato detto – un «superamento» dell’ideale crociato? In Francesco, i minori e la Terrasanta, Antonio Musarra restituisce i contorni del celebre episodio ripartendo dalle fonti, operandone una contestualizzazione spesso assente nelle numerose opere dedicate all’argomento. Di più: lo studio della documentazione coeva, conservata, in parte, presso l’Archivio custodiale, gli consente di ricostruire la storia della presenza dei Minori in Terrasanta nel corso del Duecento – dopo Francesco e prima della Custodia –, e d’inquadrarla nell’ambito del pensiero francescano dedicato alla crociata e alla tutela dei Luoghi Santi. Con risultati sorprendenti.
