Il Vescovato di Lipari-Patti in Età sveva (1196-1266)

Abstract

L’intervento proposto è inteso a definire alcuni aspetti relativi alla politica ecclesiastica in Sicilia nel corso dell’età aveva, prospettando nello specifico il caso del vescovato di Lipari-Patti negli anni che vanno da Enrico VI a Manfredi (1191-1266). Sia Federico che Manfredi, in particolare, non furono in grado di controllare l’Isola con stabilità e furono indotti a rivolgersi all’autorità ecclesiastica, che in Sicilia rappresentava un elemento di continuità all’interno di una instabilità generalizzata. Si spiega così l’interesse dei sovrani svevi a favorire i monasteri e le diocesi, in linea con la politica normanna, ma dopo il primo ventennio del Duecento, a differenza dell’epoca precedente, l’intransigente ostilità del papato comportò scelte che avrebbero prodotto una nuova e più articolata dimensione dei rapporti tra monarchia e clero locale. Il tentativo di Federico II di legare a sé le diocesi per opporsi ai pontefici si espresse in modo esemplare nei confronti di Patti, atteggiamento che emblematicamente risalta già nel corso dell’episcopato di Stefano (1179-1201), per rafforzarsi poi nel corso dei decenni successivi con Anselmo (1207-16), Giacomo di Capua (1221-27), Pagano (1229), Pandolfo (1235-44) e Filippo (1247-55), che operò fino all’età di Manfredi, un periodo di grande importanza anche per la crescita delle autonomie urbane.
