Sulla polisemia di 'hippomanes'

Abstract

Partendo da Aristotele, HA 6,18 e 6,22 si esamina la polisemia di ‘hippomanes’, che nello Stagirita non è termine omologo che indichi tanto il ‘mucus vaginae’ delle cavalle in estro tanto la caruncola frontale del puledro neonato. Esso designa piuttosto la seconda, come provato dalle precisazioni di Plinio NH 18,165 e di Eliano, NH 14,18. Dalla letteratura ‘scientifica’ il termine viene ripreso nella poesia dotta di Teocrito, 2,48 (indica una pianta) prontamente censurato dagli scoliasti per la catachresi) e di Virgilio, G. 3,280-283, che lo impiega nel duplice significato di cui sopra, e nell’epica latina d’età imperiale, variamente utilizzato quale omologo polisemico: ‘mucus vaginae’ / caruncola / pianta, cioè materia per ‘filtri’ afrodisiaci. In ultimo, ‘hippomanes’ = ‘filtro amoroso’.
