Epigramma della ‘Stele di Xanthos’

Abstract

Tra i monumenti della cosiddetta acropoli di Xanthos spicca la parte inferiore di un grande pilastro che originariamente sorreggeva una camera funeraria, su cui era collocata la statua del defunto. Sui lati del pilastro sono incise due iscrizioni in licio A e in licio B, entrambe in stato lacunoso, e un epigramma in greco di 12 linee (corrispondenti ad altrettanti versi – 2 esametri, 2 pentametri, 2 distici elegiaci e 4 esametri). In esso si decantano le gesta del figlio di Arpago, straordinario combattente negli agoni sportivi e militari, rispettoso delle divinità e particolarmente devoto a Zeus. Il nome di questo dinasta, che si è preservato solo in parte, è solitamente ricostruito come Gergis e identificato con il Kheriga menzionato nelle iscrizioni licie. Il confronto con gli altri testi della stele, dove sono nominati personaggi come Dario II, Artaserse II, Tissaferne, Amorge e altri, permette di datare l’iscrizione alla fine del V secolo. L’epigramma è un’importante testimonianza dell’uso della lingua greca in Licia prima dell’epoca ellenistica. La scelta di esprimersi in lingua greca da parte di questa dinastia, che attraverso Arpago risaliva al potente Kuprlli, dimostra l’intenzione di affermare il proprio prestigio e la propria forza politica anche di fronte ad un pubblico greco o ellenizzato.
