Abstract

Luca Serianni dealt with ancient Italian in his early works, and in particular in two articles on the ancient aretine vernacular ("Ricerche sul dialetto aretino nei secoli XIII e XIV" and "Appunti linguistici sulle ‘Formule notarili aretine del primo Trecento’", both derived from his thesis degree and published in 1972) and in the volume "Testi pratesi della fine del Dugento e dei primi del Trecento" (1976): works which, on the basis of appropriately edited documentary texts, describe the linguistic features of the two medieval Tuscan varieties. Although Serianni’s scientific interests have turned elsewhere since the early 1980s, the method and experience gained in that first decade will variously affect both his subsequent studies and his teaching practice.
