Abstract

Art, memory, history? The strange story of the Italian memorial at Auschwitz This article presents an account of the history of the Auschwitz Italian Memorial, inaugurated inside the concentration camp in 1980, closed ex officio by the Auschwitz Administration in 2011, and finally inaugurated for the second time in Florence in 2023 Its vicissitudes combine the contradictions within Italian historical memory and politics with the eternal questions regarding the educational value of art and the means of transmitting historical knowledge and trauma
