Da Anversa a Roma e ritorno. Le Sette Meraviglie del mondo di Maarten van Heemskerck e di Antonio Tempesta

Abstract

Nel Rinascimento il mito delle Sette Meraviglie del mondo conosce nuova fortuna diffondendosi nei più vari ambiti culturali e artistici. Questo articolo ruota intorno a due serie di stampe pubblicate a poco meno di quarant’anni di distanza: gli Octo mundi miracula di Maarten van Heemskerck (1572) e i Septem orbis admiranda di Antonio Tempesta (1608), stampate entrambe ad Anversa e profondamente influenzate dai valori dell’umanesimo cristiano e del neo-stoicismo che allora si trovavano al centro del dibattito culturale e religioso nei Paesi Bassi. Sotto questa comune ispirazione, le due serie si distinguono tuttavia per un rapporto molto diverso con le proprie fonti e i propri interlocutori: mentre Heemskerck intesseva un sofisticato gioco di allusioni colte destinato a interpellare i circoli artistico-letterari cui egli stesso apparteneva, Tempesta sembra voler produrre un’opera di carattere semplificato, priva di risvolti problematici e rivolta piuttosto al mercato internazionale. Il confronto fra le due serie permette così di riflettere sulla circolazione delle idee fra Italia e Paesi Bassi negli anni successivi al Concilio di Trento, e sulla sottile trama di affinità e divergenze che accomunavano e allo stesso tempo distinguevano i cittadini della Repubblica delle lettere a cavallo fra Cinque e Seicento.
