Il lavoro esamina le vicende dell’introduzione, nel sistema burocratico della tarda antichità, della figura del comes sacrarum largitionum e ne studia le funzioni, specialmente nella seconda metà del quarto secolo, in relazione all’attività di un altro importante funzionario, il comes rerum privatarum. L’esegesi delle costituzioni imperiali consente di ipotizzare che tra i due dipartimenti finanziari non vi fosse una rigida separazione di competenze, apparendo, del resto, naturale che fossero di volta in volta informati di provvedimenti che riguardavano l’uno o l’altro ramo della gestione dei beni pubblici.
