Abstract

Sulla base della documentazione tedesca e bielorussa, il saggio affronta le vicende che interessarono migliaia di militari italiani dopo l'armistizio dell'8 settembre 1943. In particolare, si sofferma sulla sorte dei militari che si arresero dopo tale data e furono catturati dai tedeschi. Chi si rifiutò di collaborare con la Germania e con la neonata RSI fu costretto a un trattamento duro nei lager nazisti, i cosiddetti IMI, Internati Militari Italiani. Tale denominazione fu attribuita da Hitler nel settembre 1943. Nel 1944 l'Armata Rossa ne liberò a migliaia dalla prigionia tedesca ma moltissimi di loro (non meno di 12.000) furono deportati nei lager di Stalin per essere liberati anni dopo.
