L'analisi di racconti fantastici ambientati nel Mediterraneo e in particolare in Italia permette di definire un vero e proprio genere narrativo ispirato dagli aspetti ambigui e perturbanti dell'esperienza del Grand Tour, evidenziati in testi di Heine, Mérimée, Gautier, James, Vernon Lee.
