Abstract

Protagonista di spicco dell’età della riforma gregoriana, Pier Damiani (1007-1072) ci appare personalità complessa, in tensione costante tra impegno riformatore e «conversatio heremitica». All’interno del suo ricco epistolario, numerosi sono gli scritti dedicati alla riflessione sulla spiritualità monastica e sulle esigenze della vita contemplativa. Non priva di originalità, in particolare, è l’epistola 49 dell’ediz. Reindel (epist. 2, 5 in PL), che il Damiani indirizza al cardinale arcidiacono Ildebrando di Soana (il futuro Gregorio VII). La lettera è databile con precisione all’autunno del 1057; in essa l’autore tesse l’elogio del sabato, interpretato in senso spirituale come il giorno del riposo in Cristo da parte dell’uomo, chiamato a farsi abitare da Dio: «homo fit sabbatum Dei et Deus sabbatum hominis». Celebrare la «laboriosa quiete» del sabato introduce l’anima contemplativa alla domenica senza fine della vita eterna. La relazione si propone di chiarire i contorni teologici e spirituali di questa dottrina sul sabato, inquadrando la lettera 49 all’interno dell’epistolario damianeo e in rapporto con le altre opere dell’Avellanita (sermoni, agiografie, poesie e testi eucologici); di ricercarne le fonti patristiche, al di là delle isidoriane «Quaestiones in Vetus Testamentum» alle quali l’editore moderno riconduce buona parte delle interpretazioni damianee; di precisare il rapporto tra sabato cristiano e sabato ebraico all’interno dell’opera di un autore tra i più rappresentativi nell’ambito della polemica antigiudaica.
