Abstract

Graffite stentatamente nel buio di un lupanare o esibite a lettere cubitali sugli edifici cittadini, impresse su oggetti di uso quotidiano o incise su monumenti funerari, le iscrizioni accompagnavano in ogni momento la vita degli abitanti del mondo romano, con uno straordinario impatto mediatico. E proprio per questo motivo le iscrizioni sono una delle fonti principali per conoscere in maniera diretta e approfondita i più diversi aspetti del mondo romano, soprattutto quelli sui quali le fonti letterarie, attente di solito ai grandi eventi o ai grandi personaggi, forniscono solo, quando le forniscono, notizie cursorie. L'epigrafe, inoltre, proprio per la sua particolare natura costituisce un inscindibile binomio di monumento e documento, di reperto archeologico e di testimonianza scritta, rappresentando, di fatto, un prezioso "bene culturale", il cui studio può essere affrontato con diversi approcci: antiquario, archeologico, filologico, linguistico, paleografico, storico, topografico, per citarne solo alcuni. Un "bene culturale", inoltre, che è facilmente accessibile a tutti, perché non è conservato solo nei musei, ma è presente ancora oggi, e in modo diffuso, nei centri urbani, grandi e piccoli, e sul territorio, accessibile, dunque, ma spesso non comprensibile appieno. Scopo di questo manuale, quindi, è fornire un agile e pratico strumento di lavoro per quanti desiderino avvicinarsi allo studio delle epigrafi.
