This project engages with an Aboriginal pedagogy and knowledge processes (i.e. drawing on Yunkaporta 2007-2009; Yunkaporta and McGinty 2009; Martin 2005; Martin and Mirraboopa 2003) in order to enhance the learning of all culturally and linguistically diverse students. This approach values Indigenous knowledges and their application beyond Indigenous contexts. Contemporary societies are characterized by increasingly more complex linguistic and cultural diversity resulting from global mobility, expanding technologies and human conflict. This diversity provides both challenges and opportunities. Previous research has centered on western pedagogies and frameworks for engaging with and understanding diversity (e.g. Crichlow 2013; Gruenwald and Smith 2014). While Aboriginal learning pedagogies have been applied within Indigenous contexts(e.g. Sarra 2014; Price 2012; Harrison 2011) their application to broader mainstream educational settings has not been explored. This Project provides an example of how Aboriginal knowledges and processes for understanding and expressing identity can be used more broadly to enhance the learning of all culturally and linguistically diverse students and develop new knowledge and understanding of this approach.
