Abstract

The existence of Lutherans in Spain between 1520 and 1560 has been the subject of a controversial historiographical debate. While the Spanish Inquisition used the accusation of Lutheranism to prosecute the humanist followers of Erasmus of Rotterdam, who, on other occasions, were processed as alumbrados, it is undeniable that the defendants in Seville and Valladolid in 1558 and 1559 were Lutherans. Likewise, the weak incidence of Lutheranism in the Iberian Peninsula has been identified and explained in terms of the Catholic values that took shape in Spanish society as a result of the historical process of Reconquista.
