Learning to walk Each one of the movements that make something as simple as taking a step or going up a few steps involves great complexity ... although they have become for us very simple operations, pure habitual. During the first year of life, the motor area of our child will evolve to allow our little one to walk. First, he or she will surpass a state of total prostration, getting then to maintain an upright posture and, finally, developing the strength and coordination to walk, run, jump ... The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) claims that the first five years in the life of a child are the most important ones for his or her brain s development, and especially the first three ones. The stimuli that parents and educators provide them with over that period are fundamental in developing their senses, movements, thinking and learning capabilities. Early stimulation helps in strengthening the body and in developing their emotions and intelligence, and it is based upon the practice of simple exercises that are conducted as games and activities. The four fundamental areas of development are the following: - Gross motor skills: these are the ample movements of the body, legs and arms. - Fine motor skills: these are the fine and more precise movements of the hands and fingers. - Language: it is the ability to communicate and speak. - Socio-affectivity: it is the ability of establishing relationships with others and express feelings and emotions. Aprendiendo a caminar Cada uno de los movimientos que compone algo tan sencillo como dar un paso o subir unos escalones conllevan gran complejidad... aunque para nosotros se hayan convertido muy sencillos, de puro habituales. Durante el primer año de vida, el área motora de nuestro hijo irá evolucionando hasta permitir que nuestro pequeño pueda andar. Primero pasará de un estado de postración total, luego conseguir mantener una postura erecta; y, por último, desarrollará la fuerza y la coordinación para andar, correr, saltar... UNICEF, la agencia de las Naciones Unidas para la infancia, defiende que los primeros cinco años de vida del niño o niña son los más importantes para el desarrollo del cerebro, especialmente los tres primeros. Los estímulos que padres y educadores brinden en ese periodo son fundamentales para desarrollar sus sentidos, movimientos, pensamiento y aprendizaje. La estimulación temprana ayuda a fortalecer el cuerpo y a desarrollar sus emociones e inteligencia; y se basa en la realización de sencillos ejercicios a modo de juegos y actividades. Existen cuatro áreas fundamentales del desarrollo: - Motricidad gruesa: son los grandes movimientos del cuerpo, piernas y brazos. - Motricidad fina: son los movimientos finos y precisos de las manos y dedos. - Lenguaje: es la capacidad de comunicarse y hablar. - Socio-afectividad: es la capacidad de relacionarse con los demás y expresar sentimientos y emociones.
