When we speak about effort as a virtue, we are not referring merely to «muscular» effort, rather effort aimed towards the good. But how do we recognize that an effort is aimed towards the good? Who determines what a virtuous act is and what is not? What way of life is instilled in young people? If effort is not a socially recognized and valued virtue, should we forget about the possibility of promoting it in classrooms? What type of effort is morally desirable? Can there be pleasure in effort? Does effort make less sense if we don t suffer? This article addresses some of these questions with the aim of analyzing the sense of socially promoting effort as a virtue.
