Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and its applications to archaelogical materials: A pilot study

Abstract

VI

ABSTRACT OPTICALLY STIMULATED LUMINESCENCE (OSL) AND ITS APPLICATIONS TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL MATERIALS: A PILOT STUDY Yurdatapan, Emre M.S., Department of Archaeometry Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülay Öke September 1997, 52 pages The objective of this study was to calibrate the Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) System purchased recently and its components. At the same time, to check the validity of this calibration, make a dating of an Archaeological pottery sample taken from the Archaeological site, Datça-Burgaz. At the beginning, a literature survey was done about the dating systems and the methodology for dating. The calibration of the system was done and the laboratory was designed to perform dating studies. Then six pottery samples were collected from the archaeological site, five of them were used as test samples in calibration. The last one was used to perform a dating study. The mineral composition of these samples were examined by X-ray Powder Diffraction Analysis. Mineralogical analysis have showed that all samples contain quartz and feldspars as essential minerals. inThe fine grain technique was used in sample preparation. The palaeodose was found by using the additive dose technique. The annual dose components of Uranium and Thorium were specified by the alpha counter. The Potassium, which has no alpha activity, was determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. From these data, and by using the software of the OSL system the age of the sample was determined with the Dose Rates of radioactive components and with an Error Analysis. The age calculated from the experimental results is 2340 ±190 years, which is in good agreement with the archaeological evidence and literature. Key Words: archaeometry, archaeological, OSL, TL, pottery, Datça-Burgaz, archaeological site, palaeodose, annual dose. IV
