Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of literature circles method on the reading comprehension, reading fluency, reading motivation and social skills of fourth grade primary school students, and to explore the reader responses on the books that are read. For this purpose, the research was carried out in mixed-embedded experimental design. The study was conducted in a elementary school in Pamukkale district of Denizli in the fall semester of 2017-2018 academic year. A total of 74 fourth graders were enrolled in the study in two groups as a control and an experimental group. The study lasted for 18 weeks. In the experimental group, the books selected with literature circles method were read. On the other hand, in the control group, the same books were read based on the practices in the current curriculum. The quantitative data of the study was collected through reading comprehension test, open-ended reading comprehension exam, the prosodic reading rubric, reading motivation scale and social skills scale. The reading comprehension test and open-ended reading comprehension exam were developed within the scope of this research, and validity and reliability studies were carried out. The qualitative data of the research, on the other hand, was obtained by an open-ended questionnaire form to explore reader responses. In the analysis of the qualitative data, descriptive analysis was used.According to the findings obtained from the analysis of the quantitative data in the study, literature circles method was influential on students' reading comprehension, reading fluency and social skills. However, literature circles method didn't make a statistically significant difference on reading motivation. As for the qualitative part of the study, according to the findings obtained from the reader responses on the books that were read, it was determined that most of the responses by the students were reader-centred. Besides, it was observed that during the research period, from the first literature circle to the last one, the students' reader-centred responses increased in every literature circle while their text-centred responses decreased.
