Abstract

The restoration of degraded ecosystems involves knowledge of the recovery of ecosystem structures and dynamics of plant and animal species. It is known that in a restoration process, the ecological interactions in the community have an important role in increasing their complexity and, furthermore, their biodiversity. This study aimed to contribute to the knowledge of some processes involved in the restoration of forest ecosystems in relation to interactions between medium and large mammals and the vegetation of these areas. The tested hypothesis was whether plantations with mixed native species may have role as ecological corridors for terrestrial mammals fauna and whether the forest fragments next to the restoration areas are contributing to their colonization by the same species. The sampling for mammals was made through sand plots for footprint records using baits, as well as the use of camera traps. The tracks for each habitat were demarcated in two different sites, in each one inside a native forest fragment, a 10-year old forest restoration experimental areas and a pasture land. We established 30 sand plots (50x50cm) in each habitat and each site (total of 180 plots), and 5 camera traps, during 15 consecutive days. The results showed that the pasture areas recorded only 3 mammal species during all the sampling period. The restoration areas had a species richness (6 species) and community composition closer to the forest fragments (8 species) .There were some variation between rainy and dry seasons, considering the relative abundances and species frequency of occurrence. These results suggest that these... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
