Abstract

The objectives of this study were to evaluate germination, growth and proline contents of plumule initial and primary roots of the pigeon pea cultivars BRS Mandarim and Caqui under salt stress and water stress associated with exogenous polyamine (putrescine) order, these cultivars, check the use of proline as a marker biochemical-physiological salinity and water potential and the dampening effect of putrescine (Put) when associated to salt stress and drought. Two experiments were conducted using a completely randomized design in a factorial 2x6x2 (BRS Mandarim and Caqui, 0.0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 120 mM NaCl and 0.0 mM and 0.5 mM Put) . For the water stress 2x5x2 factorial (BRS Mandarin and Caqui, 0.0; -0.2, -0.3, -0.4, -0.5 MPa PEG and 0.0 mM and 0.5 mM of Put). The results showed that salt stress and drought reduce seed germination and early growth of both varieties of pigeonpea. The exogenous putrescine only mitigates the deleterious effects of salt stress on seed germination of both cultivars of pigeon pea. The salt and water stresses cause accumulation of proline may be considered osmolyte physiological-biochemical indicator of the effects of stress on the seedlings of both cultivars of pigeon pea. The cause exogenous putrescine accumulation of proline in the seedlings of two cultivars of pigeon pea under salt stress and only moderate levels of water stress. The largest growth of cv. BRS Mandarim with exogenous putrescine is not related to the higher content of proline
