Abstract

Beef cattle play an important economic role in Brazil. However, Brazil does not yet have a reliable traceability system that provides information about the diet offered to the animals. Recent episodes in Europe, such the crisis caused by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) and foot and mouth disease (FMD), reaffirmed the need to improve the methods for tracing live animals and animal products. This study aimed to determine the turnover of carbon in the feces, blood and plasma of young bulls fed in feedlot. We used 18 steers of the Aberdeen Angus x Nellore raised on C4 grass. The animals were randomly divided in two treatments: C3 and C4. The animals from the C3 treatment received diets with C3 isotopic signal and the animals in the C4 treatment received diets with C4 isotopic signal during 153 days. To measure the carbon turnover in the feces, plasma and blood, we collected blood samples on days: 0,1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, 16, 21, 28, 35, 42, 56, 70, 84, 98, 112, 126, 140, 153; and feces on days: 0,1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, 16, 21.The time exponential function was used to measure the carbon turnover (isotope substitution) on feces, blood and plasma in a certain period of time. The isotopic values of feces, blood and plasma reached the balance level, indicating half-life values of 1.8, 40 and 20 days and values of 12, 267 and 134 days for exchange of 99% of carbon atoms for C3, respectively. We concluded that the steers of Aberdeen Angus x Nellore fed with C3 plants can be distinguished from those fed with C4 plants. The results obtained show that the feces reflect short-term changes in the cattle diet and that blood and plasma can indicate the old diet for a longer period
