Abstract

Several questions remain poorly explained concerning the lithostratigraphic unities of the Araripe Basin, particularly the lack of surface type-sections. To elucidate some of these questions a stratigraphic analysis was carried out in the outcrop belt in the northeast margin of the basin. The Santana do Cariri and Crato areas were selected because there are good outcrops of all stratigraphic unities, being possible to measure columnar-sections of wellexposed formations, to describe in detail the lithofacies and to obtain paleocurrents data. The lowermost Cariri Formation is an older unit without interfingering with Mesozoic strata. The Brejo Santo and Missão Velha formations (Late Jurassic, pre-rift) and Abaiara formation (Neocomnian, rift) occur in the Cariri valley in horst and graben structures. Measured columnar-sections show that the pre-rift and rift formation can be distinguished because the Abaiara Formation exhibit great facies changes, laterally and vertically, different from the prerift formations. The Aptian Barbalha Formation represents the first post-rift unit, lying with angular unconformity on the older unities. The continuity of outcrops along the escarpment of the Araripe plateau allows the construction of a good stratigraphic section, leveled by the Camadas Batateira stratigraphic mark, an important occurrence of black shales capped by sulfide-mineralized calcareous breccia. The Santana Formation is a transgressive-regressive sequence, in which marine shales interfinger with coastal sandstones, showing facies recurrence and the inconsistency of using the name Arajara Formation to its upper section.
